CITY OF ROCHESTER
HISTORY
City of Friendship and Pride
An election to incorporate the City of Rochester was held October 23, 1909 – 446 males in favor and 213 against. The first election was held December 21, 1909. Omar B Smith took office as the first Mayor on January 3, 1910.
The City is governed by the Mayor and a seven member Common Council, the Council being the legislative branch of City Government. In addition we have a Clerk-Treasurer who is responsible for financial affairs of the City and recording minutes of the Common Council meetings. City elections are conducted every four years; all elected officials serve without term limits.
The City of Rochester current Mayor is Mark L. Smiley and Clerk-Treasurer Carla Smith.
The Common Council members are: Burns Becht, Jason Grube, Mark McCall, Karen Sumpter, Ted Denton, Barry Hazel and Robert Ulerick.
There are 6 departments within the City:
Street Dept: Terry Wynn, Department Head
Fire Dept: Chief Tom Butler
Police Dept: Chief Jodi Miller
Water Dept: Jerry Wynn
Wastewater Dept: Elizabeth Nicklaus
Planning Commission/Building Inspector: Jerry Jolley
Currently there are 53 full time employees.
